Basic Urushi Coating (Traditional coating) - 2

Different Coating methods
  • Nuritate
  • Roiro
  • Kawarinuri
  • Kashoku

Over 1,000 years different coating was developed to meet the needs of each age.
Nuritate
Nuritate
Using oil content Urushi, simply coating by Hake and dried. The finishing surface is glossy smooth surface due to oil content Urushi. No polishing is required.

Sinnuri
Traditionally, this is called Nuritate of black Urushi. However, In the modern period, it also called non-oil content Urushi finish, such as Kurooiro Urushi or mixed with Sukiroiro Urusi. But, no surface polishing type finish.

Roiro
Roiro
Roiro Urushi does not contain oil, coating after polishing surface well, water polishing by Sumi (charcoal). Finish is deep glossy smooth surface.

Suri-Urushi (Fuki-Urushi) Rubbing Urushi on surface using cotton cloth, remove the excess Urushi. (repeat 7-8 times)
Finish is to enhance the beauty of wooden grain.

Kawarinuri
Kawarinurialso called Saya-nuri
Mostly developed during Edo era for decorating Saya of Samurai Sword.

Kashoku-nuri
Drawing design on Urushi coated surface. Makie, Raden, others are traditional well known kashoku-nuri


Hira-Makie

Basic Makie coating
Drawing by Fude (fine brush) with E-Urushi (drawing Urushi), and spread out Makiko powder ( Gold clustered powder and color powder) to enhance drawing design. After dried, polishing by Makiko powder after coated Suri-Urushi.

Taka-Makie

Using Sumiko (charcoal powder) or Sabi-Urushi, build up the drawing design; then, draws by Fude with E-Urushi, and spread out Gold clustered powder or color powder to enhance design. After dried, polishing by Makiko powder after coated Suri-Urushi.


Togidashi-Makie
After finished Nakanuri, draws design using Fude (fine brush) and spread out Makiko powder to enhance the design; then, finish Uwanuri coating. After dried, water polishing by Sumi (charcoal).


Shishiai Togidashi-Makie

This is combination of Taka-Makie and Togidashi-Makie, entire process is same, but water polishing by Sumi (charcoal) is complicated.

Raden
Craft thick shell to flat plate (1-2mm thickness), and cut off design or make mosaic design; then, inlay the surface. Raden uses sea shell with nacreous layer, just like pearl color.


Aogai
Craft thin shell to flat sheet (thickness: 0.08mm) cut off design or make mosaic design; then, paste on the surface by Sejime-Urushi. After finished Uwanuri, make smooth flat surface by water polishing process.


Hyoumon
This is the same process as Raden or Aogai, but uses soft metal sheet (gold, silver...) as inlay design.


Chinkin
Line-carving on the surface of Tatenuri, inlay golden leaf or line.


Kinma
Line-carving on the Urushi coated surface, applied color Urushi; then, water polishing with Sumi.


Ishime

Spread out Sumi (charcoal) powder or dried Urushi powder on surface to create wrinkles before dry up.


Tsui-shu

Overlaid Shu Urushi (red colored Urushi) for several 10 times; carved desgin. If black Urushi was used, it called Tsui-koku.


Hakue

Draw design by Nikawa glue or Sejime Urushi; then, place Gold leaf. After dried surface, remove the excess gold.


Zonsei

Draw design by Roiro Urushi on the Iro-Urushi coated surface; then, line-carved the edge after dried.


Tsuikin

Making gel sheet mixing with Urushi and color powder; then, draw and cut off design. Paste the design on the surface. It also calls Okinawa Urushi coating.


Rankaku

Pure white color is hard to make; therefore, paste eggshell cluster by Sejime Urushi.
