Nuritate |
Nuritate Using oil content Urushi, simply coating by Hake and dried. The finishing surface is glossy smooth surface due to oil content Urushi. No polishing is required. Sinnuri Traditionally, this is called Nuritate of black Urushi. However, In the modern period, it also called non-oil content Urushi finish, such as Kurooiro Urushi or mixed with Sukiroiro Urusi. But, no surface polishing type finish. |
Roiro |
Roiro
Roiro Urushi does not contain oil, coating after polishing surface well, water polishing by Sumi (charcoal). Finish is deep glossy smooth surface. Suri-Urushi (Fuki-Urushi) Rubbing Urushi on surface using cotton cloth, remove the excess Urushi. (repeat 7-8 times) Finish is to enhance the beauty of wooden grain. |
Kawarinuri |
Kawarinurialso called Saya-nuri Mostly developed during Edo era for decorating Saya of Samurai Sword. Please refer to Urushi coating page for sample coatings. |

Basic Makie coating Drawing by Fude (fine brush) with E-Urushi (drawing Urushi), and spread out Makiko powder ( Gold clustered powder and color powder) to enhance drawing design. After dried, polishing by Makiko powder after coated Suri-Urushi. |

Using Sumiko (charcoal powder) or Sabi-Urushi, build up the drawing design; then, draws by Fude with E-Urushi, and spread out Gold clustered powder or color powder to enhance design. After dried, polishing by Makiko powder after coated Suri-Urushi. |
Togidashi-Makie![]() |
After finished Nakanuri, draws design using Fude (fine brush) and spread out Makiko powder to enhance the design; then, finish Uwanuri coating. After dried, water polishing by Sumi (charcoal). |
Shishiai Togidashi-Makie![]() |
This is combination of Taka-Makie and Togidashi-Makie, entire process is same, but water polishing by Sumi (charcoal)
